World of Warcraft
About a year ago, I played a game called World of Warcraft. The game pretty much ate every waking hour of my life, to the point where it was really getting unhealthy - in many ways. Finally I managed to break of from it, and have now been clean a year.
Now I don't regret the experience, it certainly taught me why MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online roleplaying games), can be so tempting, an experience I can use in my education as a game designer. The game also had its magic moments, moments you can only experience in a MMORPG, and I also meet a lot af very cool people. Even so, I'm very pleased that I'm not playing anymore, though I'll probably play some other MMORPGS, this time a little more prepared (right).
Anyway, my character, Eldamar the rogue, reached the maximum level possible, and had some ok gear, and since there's developed this very complex meta-economy around the game, where people pay real money for fake money and virtual swords, I decided to try and sell my character on Ebay.
Now of course i researched the other characters up for sale, and was chocked when i saw that someone were actually selling characters for 800$! And even more chocking was that people was actually bidding on them. I was totally uncomprehending about this, since for me, the funniest part of the game was levelling your character, and when you did reach the maximum level it became very boring.
But anyway, I judged that my character might go for 280, that didn't sell. Then I reduced it to 150, that didn't sell either. Finally I put it up for an auction starting at 1$, and finally sold it today for 100$, which was ok I guess. Of course after paying feeds to Ebay (7$), PayPal (5$), reopening my account to get screenshots (17$), and a very ungenerous currency converter to Danish Kroner, I might just have broken even. Still it was an experience, trading in virtual products. It's a weird world.
Here's a little taste of wow, this is hilarious, really.
